10. Selesia from Re: Creators
Re: Creators tells the story of Souta, a young student who is suddenly involved in a bloody battle for the salvation of the world, in which they will face nothing more and nothing less than … fictional characters! That’s right, the creations of our stories have come to life and now they must choose to protect the world that created them or destroy it.
In Re: Creators we have already fired many characters, and while there were truly tragic moments like Mamika’s death or Setsuna’s, there is one that left us particularly shocked: Selesia’s sacrifice. In the midst of the final battle against Altair, Selesia discovers that she must face the worst possible enemy: Charon, her old story partner (and presumably her romantic interest). In the midst of this cruel dilemma, Selesia chooses to protect our world by holding Charon while Kanoya fires his final attack, disappearing the couple in an emotional farewell.
9. Accelerator of Toaru Majutsu no Index
In a city dominated by science and Esper powers, Touma Kamijou is a student who lives relaxed and carefree. However, his peace will be disturbed by the unexpected arrival of Index: a curious little nun named who will introduce him to a new and exciting world where he must face science and magic alike with the only power he possesses: the Imagine. Breaker, a power capable of denying the supernatural.
This time we will remember one of the best characters from Toaru Majutsu: Accelerator. Initially introduced as a deranged villain and defeated by our protagonist, Accelerator returns in a small arc in which we will see one of his most brutal and sensitive sides when protecting Last Order: Mikasa’s clone number 20001. In the midst of this brutal persecution, we will meet the most human side of Accelerator as he protects the little clone despite being completely destroyed.
8. Enma of Jigoku Shoujo
Enma Ai is the protagonist of Jigoku Shoujo: a disturbing anthological story of Terror focused on the daily lives of unfortunate people, who due to their great resentment towards someone will be able to access the mysterious page Jigoku Tsushin: an evil web in which, entering The name of the person you hate, you will be able to send their soul to hell … in exchange for yours.
Enma Ai was born in feudal Japan, being disowned as a child in her village due to her supernatural powers. Fearing him, the villagers took advantage of the tradition and chose Ai as a sacrifice for the mountain, condemning her to death. However, thanks to the protection of her parents and her best friend Sentarou, Ai managed to live in hiding for 6 years.
Unfortunately, an oversight ends up revealing the truth to the villagers with dire consequences for Ai and her parents. This forced sacrifice is the one that would lead Ai to take revenge by burning her village and condemning her to become the Jigoku Shoujo of hell, executing revenge on others for all eternity.
7. Rurouni Kenshin’s Tomoe: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan – Tsuioku-hen
During the anime, Kenshin’s dark past remained largely hidden and unnoticed. It was not until the arrival of these amazing 4 OVAS that we met his most ruthless and sensitive side to date. This prequel, which tells the origin of his scar, shows us Kenshin’s meeting with his first love: Tomoe, who would become his first wife.
Tomoe was a young bride, who lost her fiancé to Kenshin, later deciding to be part of the plan that would turn her into a spy sent to search for the Battosai’s weaknesses. What she would never suspect is that she would end up falling in love with the man who took her happiness and, betraying the plan to kill him, would protect him even at the cost of her life. Perhaps the most painful thing about this sacrifice is that it was Kenshin himself who accidentally ended up taking his life.
6. Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z
The Z Warriors have been with us for years and watching them go has always been a difficult time, the first few times at least. And despite the fact that in this story of powers and aliens, deaths have become a recurring theme (not to mention a parody), there are still some that touch our hearts when we remember them, such as the sacrifice of Vegeta.
Enemy at first, ally later and finally friend; Vegeta is one of the most developed characters in all of Dragon Ball Z, going from being one of the most hated to one of the most popular. Well, one of his best moments is also one of the saddest in the series, because when he is possessed by the evil Babidi and faced with the powerful Majin Buu, Vegeta decides that the only way to protect his friends and family is by unleashing a violent explosion. that he would end his life in an attempt to defeat Buu; not before giving Trunks one last hug and saying goodbye to Bulma in silence.
5. Ace from One Piece
The long-lived story of One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy: a young pirate who ventures in search of the mysterious One Piece, the treasure that will make him the King of the Pirates. This event takes place in the middle of the Marineford war, where Luffy manages to free his captive brother, and, accompanied by Whitebeard’s crew, they undertake a desperate flight from the sailors. However, Akainu (one of the three Admirals ), decides to lead a deadly attack on Luffy that ends up being blocked by his brother’s body. Ace, with a gigantic hole in his chest, dedicates his last words of thanks to his brother and his crew; while Luffy, helpless, can only watch Ace expire in his arms.
4. Lelouch from Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2
The first season of Code Geass laid the foundation for the bloody world war that would unfold on R2. Having already lost once against his father, Lelouch manages to regain his identity thanks to CC; and, orchestrating a new plan, he rises under Zero’s mask to stop the oppression of Britain once and for all.
Near the end of the anime; Lelouch, betrayed, lonely and without allies, comes to the conclusion that there is only one solution to war: Zero Requiem, his last master plan. With the help of Suzaku, Lelouch executes a brilliant strategy with which he would manage to dominate the world, earning the hatred and repudiation of all peoples.
With hatred centered on his person, the only thing missing was someone to eliminate the villain and end the war; Suzaku being the one who, wearing Zero’s mask, performs that role, stabbing our protagonist with his sword. Lelouch, smiling, expires as his sister and his closest friends find out about his plan in its last moments.
3. Ultear from Fairy Tail (2014)

In this story full of friends, fun, and fantasy, we have also had a good dose of despair, sadness, and anger.
It is precisely the first arc of this second season (the saga of the Dragons) that would show us our characters really in trouble, some of them even dying. But in this moment of despair comes a glimmer of hope in the form of Ultear: Ur’s daughter, Gray’s teacher. After 7 years, Ultear returns sorry for her sins, and in the middle of the battle against the Dragons, she uses her last energies in a powerful spell to return the time with which she would save the lives of our protagonists, sacrificing most of her own.
2. Minato and Kushina from Naruto Shippuuden
Every legend must have its origin and Naruto had it in his parents: Minato and Kushina. Hidden for most of the series, the story of the parents of the most powerful ninja in Konoha is revealed in a small arc of the series in which we will witness their meeting, romance, and their tragic end.
Kushina of the Uzumaki Clan, was a ninja fit to become the Jinchuriki of the Kyuubi, spending most of her life as its guardian. After marrying Minato and being pregnant with Naruto, Kushina is the victim of a sinister plan by Obito, who will take advantage of the birth to release the seal of the Kyuubi and use it to destroy Konoha.
Minato and Kushina manage to protect the village and their newborn son, but during the heat of the battle they both end up being mortally wounded by the Kyuubi’s claws. 1. Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
The most epic, emotional, and tearful sacrifice in anime could not be other than that of our beloved Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. In this history of revolution and freedom; Kamina is a brave young man who, along with his “brother” Simon, will lead humanity’s greatest revolution against the Beastmen aboard the most powerful robot of all: the Gurren Lagann.
Perhaps almost all of us who saw the anime for the first time thought that our undisputed protagonist was Kamina. Therefore, great was our surprise and sadness to see that our brave leader of the Dai Gurren Brigade, lost his life facing one of the enemy generals.
Well yes, in the middle of the first important battle of the Brigade, Kamina is violently killed by a spear and dying, together with his brother, carries out the last joint attack they will ever carry out. The entire Brigade celebrates victory and reclaims their leader, only to realize shortly after that he was gone for good.
Brave and fearless, our anime heroes have gifted us time and again epic and beautiful scenes, moments when they decided that their life can serve the greater good. To protect something or someone, these characters went beyond the instinct of human survival and said goodbye to this world with the satisfaction of duty accomplished and the hope of a promising future.
